RussaYog Yoga Studio In the News |

Current magazine, a publication by SGI Publications in Ann Arbor. "Learning the Ropes" by Jessica Jernigan (buzz@sgipub.com) July 2004 "As class began in the yoga studio, Jasprit Singh announced that we'd be starting with some warm-up exercises. He explained that, after completing this series of postures, 'you'll feel like you should be done, but you're not.' He wasn't kidding. 'Rope-based yoga'---a new twist on a very old practice---is a serious workout. The ropes in rope (russa) yoga dangle from the ceiling of the small, bright room that is RussaYog Studio (215 S. State Street, above Totoro and Mr. Greek's). Students use them to enhance traditional and modified yoga positions. In some postures, the ropes provide balance and stability. In others, they make it possible to use gravity to increase a stretch or create resistance. As Singh predicted, I was exhausted after the warm-up, and the giddiness I felt by the end of the hour-long class was as much a product of bone-deep fatigue as it was endorphin-fueled elation. I felt a little awkward and physically confused as I tried to achieve and maintain the postures of rope (russa) yoga, but Singh and his wife, Teresa, are very helpful and encouraging teachers. Even students assured me that it just takes one lesson to start training the body for these strenuous new movements. In rope (russa) yoga, Singh and Teresa have created a regimen offering the benefits of traditional yoga---increased balance, flexibility, and mental clarity---with the strength-building qualities of weight-training. They're both excited to teach their method to local students, and Teresa says she'd love to see 'a cool new exercise style come out of Ann Arbor.' If you're interested in giving rope yoga a try, call RussaYog at (734) 604-0741 for a class schedule." |
